This is the third tip in my series “6 Easy Tips for a Successful Triathlon Training Year” which is also available in a FREE eBook at www.GearedUp.biz/ebooks/.
…set a baseline.
Performance testing will help assess your current fitness and natural abilities in terms of:
- muscular strength,
- endurance, and
- speed.
Without an accurate fitness assessment, you will never know if performance is improving, staying the same or declining.
As the saying goes – you can’t change what you don’t measure!
Fitness is assessed in a variety of ways and is measured most accurately by a trained professional specializing in performance testing.
For the self directed athlete, Joel Friel describes the basics of fitness testing in his book “The Triathlete’s Training Bible”.
These include:
- a swim graded test,
- a bike graded test with a computrainer and
- a run graded test on a treadmill.
Remember, performance testing is a vital part of every training program.
The information gathered helps direct further training assessments and ultimately athletic improvement.
Remember, practice with purpose, and you’ll continue to improve!
